Member Ticker

Some of the changes I make to this site are less visible, but some just.. "pop". Like the latest one, the Member Ticker (the scrolling thingy just under the flags at the top of the page). If you have JavaScript enabled in your browser, chances are that you already saw it.
I know it doesn't add much to the usefulness of AllFighters, but it's fun and it was relatively easy to do. I'm also hoping that this will encourage more members to upload their photos. I'm not sure how much extra workload the ticker puts on the server; if it's too much, I will have to disable it.
Please, if you have the time, vote on the poll in my previous blog entry.

Blog Comments Made Better, Question About Photos

Hi gang,
I made some improvements to the blogs, more specifically, how the comments and votes are handled.
- Blog owners can now specify if they want comments sorted oldest-first or newest first.
- If the blog owner has enabled ratings, readers can attach their ratings to comments. Previously, only anonymous ratings were possible.
- The blog owner can disable anonymous ratings altogether, in which case it is only possible to rate along with a comment.
- Also, it is now possible to reply to a comment, by clicking on a "Reply to this" button.
- To change your blog settings, go to the preferences page and click on "Change my blog settings".
More is coming...
Something I've been thinking about:
Do you think it's a good idea to rate profile photos?
First, I don't mean to turn AllFighters into a sort of hot-or-not site. However, ratings can encourage uploading, and help float the best photos to the top. Also, members would get some sort of feedback about their photos in the process. You would, of course, be able to opt out from having your photos rated.
What do you think?
- I think this is a good idea. (3 szavazat: MCRLON30UK, StrikeFighter, Wrestlefannl)
- I have doubts, but let's give it a try. (10 szavazat: Admin, bermudabattle, Boxingmarco, duel action, EthanAxelAndrews, Halifaxfighter, ikf, pshawfocus, RingerCGN, wresto)
- I don't care. (2 szavazat: scotsgrappler, slick)
- Please don't do this. (11 szavazat: ChineseGrappler, Churd, devonwrestler, fightguy, Foofnwoo1954, jp46121, Leanmachineuk, redcloud2008, RingerCGN, SurreyGuy, travelstud)

I'm finished with Tracker/2009-06-30; now you can keep your private notes about other members right on the members' profiles. Of course, no-one else will be able to read your notes; this is for you to make keeping track of your contacts easier.
You can also read all your notes on a single page.
I hope my dear members will find this new feature useful.

New Feature: Restricted Profiles

Due to the request of some members, and some hopefully-soon-to-be-members, it is now possible to restrict your profile to registered members. A restricted profile will not be indexed by internet search engines, and visitors of the site will not be able to see the profile.
The profile will still turn up in searches, but when the visitor clicks on it, he will be brought to a page where he is asked to log in or register.
Also, blocked users will not be able to visit each others' profiles any more. I'm hoping this will help cool tempers a bit. Or not; either way, blocking a member sort of implies that you are no longer interested in any sort of exchange, and blocking the profile might just be a logical addition to that. Since blocking is a two-edged sword, you won't be able to visit the blocked member's profile either.
To hide your profile from non-registered visitors, visit your profile, and set your profile's visibility to 'Restricted'. You can set it back to 'Public' any time.
That's it for today, suggestions and comments are welcome.

RAM Upgrade and New Front Page

You may have noticed the new front page. Or maybe you haven't, that's good too because it means you already know the side inside out.
Also, there was a bit of a downtime today as I was upgrading the memory of the AllFighters.info server from 1GB to 4GB. As membership and site usage have been climbing steadily in the past 6 months, this, along with the new database management system, will hopefully be able to serve the next 1000 members with adequate speed.
I recently got a request from someone who is not a member yet. The guy wrote:
- Is there a way to post a profile that is 100% not public?
- right now anyone can see member profiles without even having an account. Also the profiles become very public and are easily searchable by google. Is there a way to post a profile that cannot be found on google searches and is only visible to members who have profiles?
Do you think this is a good idea? Tell me.
