I think a 'real fist fight' can have many definitions, depending on the gents involved. Used to meet up with a guy and we would face each other and do face shots, one for one, starting easy and amping it up as we went along, until one of us called a halt. Was that a fist fight? Maybe...after all we were punching each other in the face with our fists. Another guy and I went for brawling/fisticuffs with the understanding that we weren't going to take each other's heads off. Was that a fist fight? We fought with our fists, so seems like it would qualify. There is always a huge attraction for flat out full on fist fight/brawl...but...also not mad dog crazy....really don't want to end up in the ER or be taking the other guy there either. So...engaging in man v. man combat using one's fists seems to be the essential definition. Rules, etc. can vary from encounter to encounter IMHO.
Yeah you sound like a man who’s actually done this stuff, which I have too. You can get get satisfyingly brutal, though - even when you hold back a little. Pic - me in Berlin last year, using only hand wraps.

I think "mad dog crazy" is probably where most of us don't want to go. But, who knows. I think some guys who like the idea of an opponent who loses it and beats the fuck out of them. Whether they would want this in real life is another question.
I have had a few guys suggest a fight ends when the winner says it does. So, getting into the realm of unsportsmanlike conduct. Again, I don' think there are many such fights among our extended ranks.
In my experience I stay away from streetfights, and only fist fight with guys I trust. Sportmanship is key when I get into a fist fight. Some guys can't hold their temper, and I've learned the hard way which friends I can't fist fight with and which I can.
Great comments. For me, a fist fight is two guys punching it out until one is out cold or says he's had enough. I see it as a stand up fight; if one man is down, the other waits till he gets up and is ok continuing the fight. So I guess for me, a fist fight is a punching contest. Once a fight goes to the ground and there is kicking and kneeing in the balls, it's a brawl. I guess I'm taking the meaning of fist fight maybe too literally but that's what comes into my mind when a guy says fist fight.
Real fist fight, school yard rules like 1 on 1 punching clinch or the old school style boxing without gloves till 1 man down on the front or back and 1 man still standing. Fist fighting change during events of timeline .
I think what you describe certainly constitutes a real fist fight for sure. Some guys include no biting or eye-gouging and that seems perfectly reasonable to me. I've done a few that are standing only and a few where going to the ground is find. I've only ever done two truly NHB/no rules fight, but I've done more than a few fist fights. The only rule I won't negotiate on is the fight ends when someone calls it quits or gets knocked out.
that works for me; I'm good with no biting, eye gouging etc, but like to go to either a real KO or until the loser can't fight---then he gets fucked hard!
I'm interested in knowing what constitutes a fist fight for others? For me a real fist fight is truly NHB, no pulled punches to face, head, body, balls. Kicking, elbows, knees all OK. No weapons (sapp gloves, brass knuckles). Full intention to knock out your opponent and leave him seriously bruised and bloody and maybe with some broken ribs. I will happily admit I have not been in such a fight as an adult.
Have others had this level of fight without boxing gloves and/or headgear as an adult? Obviously the real MMA guys don't all go to the hospital after a fight so it can be painful without being permanently damaging. I just don't know anyone (and I know lots of guys) who have done this, and only a few I suspect would.

This is exactly my definition of fist fight.
Two gentlemen setting their differences with their bare fists.

Thanks. I like the distinction between a fistfight and a brawl.
