Had a fine time at the Open Mat Day July 10th at the gym in Claymont DE. Six wrestlers showed plus Josh who our host brought in to coach and wrestle. I was the lightweight at 135, the others were a few lbs up or down from the 200 mark. To start, the big guys went at each other pretty intensely with a mix of submission wrestling, grappling and MMA moves. My little bod is not competitive and is subject to injury at that weight class so I just watched for a while.
Josh, the coach, made the day for me. He is a 160 lb experienced pro wrestler with mma knowledge who teaches at a pro school. He demonstrated moves, tried them with each of us, and wrestled with each of us, giving back the intensity level that we put in. Amazing ability to seriously battle a 240 pounder then follow seconds later by doing light back and forth with me at my minimal weight and skill level. Totally safe, sane, and patient, he made it feel as though we were slightly competitive even though he could shut me down at any second. When the rest of us rested Josh bounced around the ring taking bumps, leaping off the ropes, practicing pro moves and kicks and otherwise showing how he maintains the amazing fitness level he has achieved.
There was something for everyone and no undue pressure to do anything you didn’t want to. All styles and experience levels are welcome. A good place for beginners to see some of what the MF scene is all about. It’s hard to imagine anyone into wrestling not enjoying the afternoon. With both a pro ring and a good mat area there was plenty of space. The event ended with oil wrestling for those who wanted it.
One of the top group events I’ve been to. I hope it happens again and it would be great if a few more guys joined in.
Sounds like you had a good time Bob. Me too! These events are always a blast! Such a great bunch of guys and something there for everyone. I picked up a few good tips from Josh when he was demonstrating some techniques for us. Improved my arm bar execution and already got to use it in a match I had today. :-)
Next Open Gym Day is September 11th, Noon to 5 PM. The event will be posted a couple weeks before the event.
