Competitive Fighters

Wrestling vs Grappling vs MMA

For me it's like that:

MMA = punch, kick, submissions, etc.

Grappling = MMA - striking and any non-striking style that can be useful in MMA (but I usually use it to refer to BJJ and luta livre)

Wrestling = greco-roman and/or freestyle...trying to pin your opponent

Submission wrestling = see grappling

I'm more confused about people mixing up gutpunching with boxing/kickboxing. Because that's really a different game then. Boxing/kickboxing involves trying not to get hit, where gutpunching is usually about getting hit.

MMA without headshots is like boxing without headshots. You can do that and it can be fun, but it's a different sport. Still it's just reasonable to call it "X minus headshots". 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you fight "for fun"/"non-competitive" where you mostly just enjoy each other (which is what most of the fighting on MF is, I think) those labels get I bit blurry. I mean...when you enjoy each other and it's a relaxed roll...you don't jump for a quick submission, right? And if you know the other guy likes gutpunching and you happen to get him in a nice hold and have a free hand...

On the other side: If you go competitive and agree upon boxing rules, it's quite a no go to suddenly kick the other guy in the face.

So... I'd say for competitive fights it's important to use the right terms and make sure both use them in the same way. For non-competitive fights it's not.

Is not MMA without headshots pankration in some ways?

Yep, I'd agree to that. But I think it's too...unknown? And I think that name is a bit...off.
Imagine telling somebody you want to fight by pankration rules and the other guy only knows the ancient greek version. 😁

I have wrestled for 25 years and never understand the differences between the following:

Wrestling
Grappling
MMA
Freestyle
Professional
Promission

Wrestling encompasses the entire world of combat sports (minus boxing). Is grappling with or without strikes? Freestyle is sometimes called Greco or Folkstyle. Professional wrestling is more entertainment than sport. I thought Promission is a combination of Pro and submission. If I like to do MMA without face or head shots, is it not MMA?

Feel free to comment on any of the above. I really don't know what to call my own hybrid style of wrestling.
