I'm both a gi and nogi guy realizing that there are benefits to both including strengthening grips and understanding technique and implementing skills that are available to both. But if you threw me in with the dogs and said train for three hours, I'd say there is a love for nogi in more ways than one. But there is something that's also very enticing when two guys are rolling a bit more slowly in the gi and we both are shirtless losing our belts in our struggle. The smell of sweaty gis offers a sense of rivalry that cannot be replicated in nogi. There is a sense of tribal brotherhood when we both are on the go and going at it for hours.
I prefer training in gi. It allows me to do all the same techniques as no-gi, but with the added advantage of controlling my opponent using their lapel, sleeves, or pants. The grips on the gi open up a whole world of moves, submissions, and escapes that simply aren’t available in no-gi. Tonight, I trained no-gi and landed a couple of darces—easier to slide into without the friction of the gi. However, some of my opponents relied on wrist grabs, which are easy to break free from. If we’d been in gi, it would have been a very different game. I train both styles, but when it comes to competition, gi is my choice.
But when it comes to improving your game, gi is better. It actually helps with your no-gi game as gi forces you to be more alert(trains your muscle memory and reflexes) because of the unlimited grips and counters you can have with the gi.
Maybe coz my grip strength isn't as good, and DOES IT HURT. But one can roll in gi minus all the grips.
Also in no-gi, I find it easier to slip out of tight spaces compared to gi which has more friction.
I prefer gi because it feels more like a mental battle with the grips. No gi relies much more on athleticism. However, looking at my competition record I have done better in no gi almost every time.

2025-01-17 12:12I prefer Gi. I consider myself a very reactive/defensive fighter. Gi lets me get better grips to control my opponent and slow things down.
Top Closed Guard in Gi has more advantage than no-gi IMO. Without grips, i get broken down in seconds.
Also, there's less sweat in Gi so I'm less likely to slip in the middle of my shots/takedowns.

So in short, for a match, no-gi.
For training, gi
